Raise your hand if you have ever turned down a guy because he was shorter than you. Yep, same here. I know dating a short(er) guy is a delicate subject for a lot of tall ladies, and some of you wouldn’t consider going there... Fair enough, each to their own. But I decided to date a shorter guy. I fell in love with him. And I married him. Turns out, far from being ‘unconventional’, it WORKS! So I thought I’d set out some of the reasons us tall girls could be selling ourselves short (pun entirely intended).
A classic case of double standards?
Let’s be first to admit that we don’t like it when we, as tall women, are judged by our height. It’s not nice to hear that someone won’t date you because you are ‘too tall’, yet we do exactly this to shorter guys. Plenty of ‘jokes’ about how short(er) guys even dare think that tall girls are interested in them on Instagram consolidate this argument. If you think about it; isn’t this just as shallow as not wanting to date someone because of their weight, hair colour, or because they sneeze funny?
Modern day hunter-gatherer
A common argument I hear is that we want a guy to be taller in order for us to feel safe, secure and protected. Please! We live in a modern society; the Stone Age where we need a man to protect us from other wildlings is long gone. To me, being able to rely on each other, looking after each other and being there for each other is what makes me feel safe, secure and protected; that has *nothing* to do with height. And isn’t it fair to say that we all tend to agree with Beyonce to prove our independence when she sings ‘Who run the world (Girls)’? Exactly.
The full package
My husband is quite a bit shorter than me (I’m 6’2, he’s 5’8”). What he may lack in height, he makes up for in personality. He knows what he wants, he is confident, he has strong opinions and is not afraid to share them. These features are not guaranteed on ALL shorter guys, but research does suggest that they generally are more confident than their taller counterparts, and don’t we all like a strong, confident man? My guy also has a great sense of humour, a dose of British charm, he loves me unconditionally (even when I hide chocolate on the top shelf) and we are physically attracted to each other. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
Let’s get down to specifics
I know you’ve got questions. I can hear you thinking! So here we go: YES, we do get looks occasionally, and we don’t care. He’s my man and I am proud to hold his hand. NO, he doesn’t mind me wearing heels; in fact, he encourages it, as he likes to see a girl in heels. YES, we make fun of ourselves; I call him ‘Hobbit’, he calls me ‘Elf’, we like to keep it light hearted. YES, we spoon, he has to be big spoon though as it won’t fit the other way due to my long legs. YES, occasionally, I do hug him when I’m in my highest heels and he’s barefoot, just because I can. (And if I really need to hug a tall guy, I’ll go to my dad or my brother)
The last word
It’s quite simple really: I just wasn’t willing to let my height limit my choice in partner the way it limits my choice in clothing, shoes or plane seats for instance. So if you do find that rare perfect fit, albeit in a smaller package than you perhaps had hoped for, don’t hesitate. Go for it and do NOT let your height stand in the way of your happiness.
