1. We make better swimmers
Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin. Need we say more? Michael’s set the record for winning the most medals (22) of any Olympic athlete in history. And he’s got size 14’s. Missy, US women’s size 13, has won four gold medals and was the 2012 World Swimmer of the Year. Big feet give you a huge propulsive advantage in the water and lots of top swimmers have them.
2. We're faster sprinters
At least if you have longer toes. Researchers have found that competitive sprinters have significantly longer bones in their forefeet than non-sprinters. Funnily enough, Cheetahs have longer toes than lions.
3. We’re more fun to dance with
Remember dancing round on your parent’s feet? There’s something oddly magical about twirling round your living room without having to actually move. And now you get to impress the next generation with your own ‘stand-on-my-feet-and-I’ll-dance’ skills. And of course the bigger your feet, the better you’re going to be at it!
4. We’ve got better balance
Unfortunately we can’t find any scientific evidence to back this up but it sounds plausible. Surely a larger surface area provides better balance? There’s bound to be a study out there somewhere to support our theory.
5. We’ve got healthier knees
Logic says this one’s true. Your feet work as natural shock-absorbers, helping to prevent shock-waves from travelling up your legs and causing painful knees. So the bigger your feet, then the better they are at shock-absorbing (presumably).
6. We’re in good company
There are plenty of famous people with big feet. Elle Macpherson (size 12), Gwendoline Christie (size 13), Kate Winslet (size 11), Uma Therman (size 11), Shaquille O’Neal (size 22), Michael Phelps (size 14) and Ivo Karlovic (size 16) - just to name a few.
