Diary of a tall girl

It’s all about the shoes

While taking the tube to work this morning, bleary eyed and in need of a coffee I noticed an article in the paper which grabbed me “Being tall is hell for me, says Liv

I read on to find Hollywood actress Liv Tyler discussing her hatred of high heels. “In my everyday life I wear flats” She went on to mention “I’m over six foot in heels, and I feel like such a moose. I wish I was petite”

The article was driving tall women away from wearing heels instead of encouraging women to celebrate their height which really irritated me. When I was a teenager I felt more self conscious as I towered over many of my friends but now approaching my mid thirties I couldn’t care less. I suppose my confidence has grown, I’m taller than my friends anyway so why not embrace it?

My best friend Suze is great with things like confidence, she’s only 5” 2, when we meet up we look like little and large! She’s always been openly jealous of my height and encourages me to put on a pair of three inch stilettos at every opportunity. Many of my friends who are blessed with extra inches don’t feel the need to wear heels because they are “too tall already”. Of course I realise this isn’t a fully fledged reason, if high heels hurt, then avoid them- that’s a reason.

For me, heels are not a tool for being taller instead they offer a finishing touch that flats and sandals just can’t provide. Remember Naomi Campbell’s infamous trip on the Vivienne Westwood runway in those eight inch platforms? Yes, she fell but there was never one second that she didn’t look anything other than glamorous.

There’s a certain empowerment about stepping out looking long and luscious. Tall women who avoid heels don’t realise what they are missing!

I'm 5'11" and I love my heels! I'm really pleased to see that LTS has done a range of slightly higher heeled shoes this year.

I totally agree with you, Sam. When I was a teenager I really did not enjoy being taller than the majority of my class mates. Now that I am in my 30s, I love my height. I enjoy all the comments and adoration - and even envy. My Pilates partner is a little over 5' (I am 6'1") and always comments on how she is going to come back in another life with a long pair of legs like mine. As far as high heels go - I don't mind them. I have just never found a pair that is really comfortable. I don't wear flats and agree that a heel helps to complement an elegant outfit.

I always find it so irritating when people make the assumption that just because you're tall you shouldn't wear high heels. I'm only 5'10" (this is probably the only place in the country I can say that without an outcry!) and I regularly wear 4 and 5 inch heels...why? for the same reason women who are 5'3" wear them - because they make me feel glamorous and sexy and make my legs look even longer - showing off my best asset!! If you've got it, flaunt it, that's what I say!!!

Hi, I totally agree with you... I am 6'4" and nearly always wear 3-4 inch heels... I've had people come up to me to say that I shouldn't wear heels cos I'm tall - I just say to them, I'm already 6'4" in bare feet so another 3 inches isn't going to make much of a difference to the overall height! My husband is 6'2" and absolutely loves it when I wear heels, he's proud of my height and has taught me be to. During my teens I was soooooooo self conscious about it all but now also approaching my mid thirties, I couldn't care less about what people say... they are just jealous!

As a girl, I was quite fortunate to have a very tall aunt who inspired me to never slouch and to never be shy about my height. I have worn mid-height heels for most of my life and also enjoy platforms. I find that flats tend to look out of proportion to the rest of me!

Personally - I have a gammy knee (accident a few years ago) and can't wear flats (eg ballerina style flats - or not for long periods) and can't wear these new heels that LTS have brought in - I wish you all well in your 3-inchers - so long as my kittens and brogues etc are still allowed : ) But certainly it is good to see an elegant goddess stalking in cool boots.

I'm 6'3" and I actually wear heels BECAUSE I'm tall. I want to look as feminine as possible with my height and I feel more comfortable and balanced on heels than I do on flats!

I am a flat footed, size 10, 15 year old. i love flats but my mum wants me to get used to high heels. i tried it once to a wedding and i had to take my shoes off before the end of the party. i cant really walk in high heels and i feel as a girl it should come natural to me. i actually used to feel ashamed to tell people my shoe size but then decided, whats the use even if they laugh at me it wont kill me. i envy those girls with tiny size 5 feet because they can get thier shoes anywhere but i cant. so i try as much as i can not to think of shoe sizes only beautiful shoes. i think tall women are beautiful and elegant
